We've got answers!

We understand how difficult it may be to leave your pet and home with someone new, or you may be new to pet sitting services. We've listed some common pet sitting questions below that pet parents might ask or that we receive from new clients.

Why Use a Pet Sitter Rather than Boarding?

Advantages for Your Pet:

  • Your pet remains in a safe, secure environment where sights, sounds and smells are familiar, reducing anxiety.
  • Your pet follows their normal diet and general routine.
  • Your pet is not exposed to illnesses or parasites from other animals.
  • Your pet is not traumatized or stressed by travel, being crated, or remaining in a cage for the duration of your absence.
  • Your pet receives love, affection, personal care and attention in the comfort of their home from a trusted pet sitter while you are away.

Advantages for the Pet Parent:

  • You are not inconvenienced or stressed by transporting your pet just before your trip.
  • You can remain with your pet right up until you depart.
  • You can see your pet the moment you return without the need to make an appointment for pet pick up.
  • You don't need to impose on a friend, family member or neighbor to provide pet sitting.
  • Your home is more secure because we are monitoring at each visit.
  • You will be able to relax and enjoy your time away knowing your pet is being given personalized, loving care. 

I've never used a pet sitter. What should I expect?

Every pet sitter manages their business differently. This is what you can expect when working with us:

  • We will meet with you and your pet in your home.
  • If we all like each other, we'll gather detailed information about caring for your pet and your home.
  • We'll have you show us where your pet food will be located, where your pet eats and drinks water, and provide any specifics about meal time, treats and any medications.
  • We'll want to see where your pet sleeps and hangs out, plays, location of toys and any preferred affections..
  • We'll need to see the litter box location and supplies and  have you explain their typical or unusual behaviors to us.
  • We'll complete a customer and pet information form including pet details and your Veterinarian information.
  • We'll ask you to complete a service agreement form including the rate per visit and total for the service period. 
  • A fee equal to 1/2 of the total service is required at the time of your reservation. The balance is due to be left at your home for us when we come for our first visit with your pet. 
  • We will agree to an entry method (key, door keypad, garage keypad, etc.), get a key if needed and show us any alarm system if present and operational.

Do I contact you before I leave and when I return home?

Yes.  Please call or text us a day or two before you depart just to confirm there haven't been any changes to your travel plans and pet care needs. Also call or text us when you return. If we don't hear from you, we will reach out to connect. If we cannot reach you, we will continue to visit your pet until you reach us, or we can reach you. This ensures the health and safety of your pet in case you are unexpectedly delayed. 

Are you licensed, bonded and insured?

The City of Salem does not require a business license for pet sitting. We are bonded and insured through Professional United Pet Sitters. 

Can you provide references?

Yes. We provide our references during our free client meeting.

How much notice do I need to give you for a reservation?

If you are a returning customer and we have your key in our safe, we can almost always accommodate. However, for your convenience and ours, please make reservations as early as possible, especially for holidays. For new clients, it's necessary to contact us several days before your trip so we have time to schedule a new client meeting with you in advance of your departure.

Are you available on holidays?

Yes, we are generally available. However, holidays are some of our busiest times and our schedule can fill fast. Contact us and make reservations early to ensure we have room in our pet sitting schedule.

Can you get mail and packages?

Yes. We can pick up your mail, newspaper, packages and provide other home care such as turning lights on/off, taking garbage to and from the curb and watering plants.

What is your pet sitting rate?

Can you visit more than once per day?

Yes, we can make as many visits per day as your pet requires. We charge per number of visits, not per day or per pet. You can find our current rate per visit on our Services page.

Can you provide overnight care?

No. We are no longer available for overnight pet sitting.
